Nethili peera pattichathu /Anchovies in coconut mixture kerala style

It is a traditional Kerala fish recipe. We can use nethili or small sardine fish  for this dish. You may use mango or fish tamarind as souring agent. Ok, let's move to the recipe.

For coconut mixture:

·  Green chillies : 2
·  Grated coconut : 1 cup
·  Ginger, chopped : 1 tspn
·  Chilli powder : 1/2 tspn
·  Turmeric powder : 1/4 tspn
·  Coriander powder : 1 tspn

·  Wash and clean the fish .Set aside. Wash and soak the tamarind in water.

·  Take a bowl, add grated coconut, green chilli ,salt ,turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder. Mix well with your hand and set aside.

·  Heat oil in claypot. Swirl the pot so that the oil will spread to the whole area.
·  Now add sliced shallots, curry leaves and chopped ginger. Sauté it well.
·  Add in the coconut mixture and mix it well. Now add soaked tamarind

·  Add cleaned fish and mix it gently with coconut mixture(Amma used to toss the clay pot )
·  Now add 1/4 cup of water and cover the clay pot with its lid. Simmer the gas and cook till almost all water is evaporated.

Energy bites recipe is no-bake version, so it's easy to make them too.

Use color printer to make the fancy labels and decorate the top of the jar with ribbon or holiday themed fabric.

Happy Holidays :)

  • 1 cup Rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup Butterscotch chocochip
  • 1/4 cup Raisin
  • 1/2 cup Cereal
  • 1 pint Mason jar

Makes : 15 to 20 balls

Step 1: Layer the ingredients

Energy in a Jar

Use funnel or fold paper like funnel shape. Keep the funnel in mouth of the jar and start layering the ingredients as listed order.

Step 2: Add label and instruction

I used online editing tool for making these tags.

I created two types of label. One for Name label and other for energy bite recipe label. Recipe Tag is very important because that will provide instructions on how to prepare energy bites.

Take print out of these two labels and trim it carefully using Scissor and punch a hole in recipe label and insert thread on the hole. Recipe tag and name tag is ready.

Stick the Name tag on the Mason jar lid using Glue.
Close the lid carefully. Tie the recipe tag on neck of the jar.

I uploaded the recipe tag image. you can use that. In case you are designing your own labels, here is the instruction for Energy bites.

* Take jar ingredients in a bowl, add 2 to 3 tbsp of peanut butter. Mix well and roll them into 1 inch ball. Freeze it for an hour.

(Note : If you are allergic to peanut butter, add almond butter)

You are done!
